You might recognise the name from his 20 years plus treading the boards with Aussie bush folk punk legends, Handsome Young Strangers. You might also be wondering why he made the decision to launch a solo project and where the band name, the Adenoma Assassins, comes from.
Early in 2024, Driza suffered from 2 strokes, after which and they discovered an adenoma (a pituitary gland tumour) in his head that had grown in the wrong direction and was blocking his right carotid artery. With live performances on hold indefinitely, and uncertain of his future, he decided to record a bunch of tunes he’d written over the years but rarely performed. The first taste of those recordings comes in the form the debut 7″ single from Driza-Bone-D & the Adenoma Asassins.
The Oz country A-side, Curator of the Track, is an ode to Driza’s father-in-law, Jack, who sadly passed away 2 years ago. Jack lived on the outskirts of Grenfell in NSW and founded the Pinnacle Guinea Pig Race Club where people would bet illegally on guinea pig races to raise money for charity.
The B-side, The Lock Up Keeper, is a dark bush ballad that tells the story of Constable Nelson who tried to arrest the Ben Hall Gang, near the small town of Collector in 1865.
Joining Driza (vocals, mandocello, ganjo, guitars) as the Adenoma Assassins are Marc Scully (bass – ex-Deadly Hume, Ratcat, Nick Barker & the Reptiles), Simon Wales (drums – Handsome Young Strangers, the Allniters), Marcus Peter-Holden (violin, viola, lapsteel – Mic Conway’s National Junk Band), Andrew ‘Freddo’ Donkin (blues harp – ex-Handsome Young Strangers)
Now recovered after successful surgery, Driza is back on stage and will be releasing a full album with an East Coast tour in support later in 2025.
The Curator of the Track is out January 10 on 7″ Vinyl and Digital.
